Operational leadership · Preparedness · International sport & events

Big ideas.
Made real.

I bring people, plans and practical decisions together to build projects and prepare for the unexpected.

I have been producing events since 2000. My work combines international project development, operational leadership and preparedness, from the first proposal and funding preparation to budgets, responsibilities and production planning.

Across sport, live production and destination development, I work with specialist teams, suppliers and decision-makers. I help turn complex requirements into plans people can use, with clear responsibilities and practical next steps.

I’m Jussa — Jussi-Pekka Kinnunen, my global friends call me Legs.
A former international freestyle skier, event producer and sports leader with an entrepreneurial approach: I see an opportunity, take the initiative and stay with it through the difficult work of making it happen. That is how I started the process that brought X Games to Ruka, Finland.

X Games Ruka — I started the conversation. Then built the project.

From first approach to host agreement · 2025–2026

In February 2025, I approached X Games with the idea of bringing the event to Ruka, Finland. I drove the early development largely on my own, investing time, sustained effort and personal relationships before there was any certainty that the event would happen.

As the project advanced, I hired a local colleague to build the preparation further. Commercial contributors joined along the way, and a broader delivery team came together in summer 2026. I remained central to connecting the people, decisions and workstreams needed to move the project forward.

Over 18 months, I developed the host proposal, advanced public funding preparation, worked through host agreement negotiations, built budgets and led work across sport, venue, broadcast and pre-production planning. I brought specialist expertise into the project and built direct working relationships between X Games and Finnish stakeholders.

The work progressed from my initial approach to a signed host agreement and the public launch of X Games Ruka 2027, in collaboration with X Games, Rukakeskus, the City of Kuusamo, Ruka-Kuusamo Tourism and the specialists involved.

My role began before there was an established project team. I took the initiative and led the preparation that turned an opportunity into a signed host agreement.

Safety and emergency preparedness

I also developed the safety and emergency preparedness framework for X Games Ruka 2027, structuring preparation into 22 workstreams. The framework covers responsibilities, risk management, emergency response, medical and rescue arrangements, evacuation, communications and readiness exercises.

I prepared the initial risk register with 17 scenarios, the permit register, a proposed incident command model and sport-specific emergency action plan templates. These documents establish a basis for review and completion with the responsible specialists and authorities. Final appointments, operational details and approvals remain part of the delivery team's work.

World Championships

Competition leadership & Technical Delegate

At Ruka, I served as Chief of Competition for FIS World Cup events from 2010 to 2014 and as Executive Producer in 2016, working on events with overall budgets exceeding €500,000.

My FIS record includes 62 completed competition assignments as Technical Delegate across six countries, including 16 World Cup competitions. The work spans freestyle skiing and snowboard, including Calgary halfpipe, Chur big air and the 2023 World Championships in Bakuriani.

I have also served on FIS committees, including the Park & Pipe Sub-Committee. These roles have built lasting personal working relationships with federation leaders, technical specialists and event decision-makers around the world.

Ruka2030 &
Invest in Kuusamo

Project Manager · City of Kuusamo · EU JTF

As Project Manager for the City of Kuusamo’s EU Just Transition Fund-supported Ruka2030 project, I worked across destination development, investment opportunities and the practical needs of a growing tourism region.

I helped develop the Invest in Kuusamo initiative and contributed to its market analysis. For a 30-apartment workforce housing development with Kuusamon Vuokratalot, I arranged municipal financing and negotiated five-year lease commitments with eight companies.

The work connected public funding, business needs and long-term commitments to address a concrete barrier to growth: housing for employees.

My story

Who is Jussa?

My father founded a ski resort, and I grew up in that environment. Skiing became my sport, my career and the starting point for many of the relationships I still value today.

Alongside event production since 2000, I built an international coaching career in Australia and Switzerland. I later worked as Skill Training Specialist at Kisakallio Sports Institute (2016–2020) and High Performance Director at Ski Sport Finland and the Finnish Snowboard Association (2020–2022).

My preparedness experience developed from participating in exercises to planning and leading them in Australia, at Kisakallio, in federation roles and in event production. During COVID-19, federation work included adapting operations to disruption and changing requirements. This experience comes from operational responsibilities across sport and events.

I like bringing people together around something worth doing. My network reaches across the international sports community — from federation leadership and the Olympic movement to event owners, host destinations and business decision-makers.

These are personal relationships built over decades as an athlete, coach, sports leader and event professional. Across countries and organisations, I know the people behind the decisions — and they know me.

I put these relationships to work: opening the first conversation, bringing expertise into a project and getting the right people around the table. The trust behind those connections is earned through years of working together and following through.

The athlete’s perspective

Before I built events,
I competed in them.

I competed internationally in moguls and dual moguls from 1995 to 2005. My FIS record spans 12 countries across four continents, including 21 World Cup appearances, with a best finish of 15th in Madonna di Campiglio and 13 finishes inside the top 30.

I won the European Cup dual moguls competition in Salla in 2003 and returned to the podium there in 2004. My Finnish Championship medals include a senior silver, alongside gold, silver and multiple bronzes at junior level.

Those years taught me how preparation, reliable equipment, coaching and event delivery affect performance. I have carried the athlete's perspective into coaching, sports leadership and project work.

Having grown up in a ski resort and spent much of my career in winter sports, I have extensive familiarity with Salomon and Atomic products and broader knowledge of other Amer Sports brands. I understand how much athletes, coaches and recreational users rely on equipment and the people behind it.

Crisis response in practice

A travel barrier.
A practical solution.

Ruka, December 2021 · International freestyle skiing · Beijing 2022 qualification

The challenge

In early winter 2021, some international freestyle athletes had received COVID-19 vaccines that did not meet the entry requirements for their upcoming competitions in the United States and Canada. With Olympic qualification continuing until the end of January 2022, the travel barrier put their remaining qualification opportunities at risk.

What I did

I used my contacts to reach senior leadership at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and arranged urgent delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to Ruka. The athletes and staff concerned were vaccinated there by a doctor.

The outcome

The teams subsequently received permission to enter the United States and Canada, allowing them to continue their qualification campaigns. The teams involved went on to participate in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

This is how I use my international network in a crisis: identify the obstacle, reach the people who can help resolve it and coordinate a practical response. My role was to connect the right people and organise the arrangements; medical decisions and vaccination were handled by healthcare professionals.
